About The World Schools Golf Challenge Minimize

The objectives of the Challenge are:

  • To encourage participation and development of golf within high schools and the educational system.
  • To assist promising high school golfers to continue to develop their skills on new courses and in friendly competition with players from throughout the golfing world.
  • To provide a solid base for young golfers to plan their golfing future.
  • To provide educational opportunities and experiences in Australia for students with an interest in golf.
  • To promote the enjoyment and qualities of golf as a recreational alternative for students regardless of their golfing abilities.

The World Schools Golf Challenge is a once in a life time experience for high school golfers, their coaches, teachers, families and supporters.

Schools are invited to send teams to South Australia to experience the sporting, cultural and educational experiences that the region and the tournament have to offer.

Team members must be pupils or immediate past pupils of the same school (refer Conditions of Entry page for definition of ‘Immediate past’).

In support of the first objective above, the organizers have created a ‘Combined District Schools’ division specifically to encourage small schools to include golf as part of their sporting curriculum by allowing a team to consist of pupils from multiple schools within the same district. Local golf associations could also use this division as a springboard to get golf programs started within schools in the district. A ‘District’ is defined as a town, subdivision of a county, region or locality and team members in this division must be made up of current or immediate past pupils of schools from a common district(refer Conditions of Entry page for procedure for ascertaining eligibility to enter in this division). By including this division the organizers encourage schools with small enrolments or no golf program to be part of the World Schools Golf Challenge by having one or two of their roll represent their school and district in an international golf event.

All players must have official handicaps from recognised golf associations. Handicaps will be checked and the organisers will have the right to amend handicaps where there appear to be discrepancies. A maximum playing handicap of 21 will apply.

All teams will need to be accompanied by teachers, coaches or registered caregivers on a ratio of 1 adult for every 8 students. In the event the group is less than 8 there must be one supervising adult.

Teams can be all boys, all girls or co-ed.

Combining educational experiences with golfing opportunities, the World Schools Golf Challenge is open to any school from any part of the world. The structure of the World Schools Golf Challenge ensures that participants will broaden their education and understanding of different parts of the world and experience interaction with individuals and teams from other countries.

Under the direction of experienced golf tournament organisers the student golfers will have the opportunity to test their skills on new courses against international players and, in some cases, quite different conditions to what they may be used to.
All of this will lead to the understanding of the different skill sets, physical and mental, required to develop their game to compete at a higher level should they wish to.

Teachers & Coaches

We have learnt from the inaugural WSGC that it is a chance for the accompanying teachers/coaches to exchange ideas and also develop inter-school activity.

The 2009 World Schools Golf Challenge will feature:

Educational and cultural activities relating to the geography and culture of Australia and South Australia in particular.

A practise round at one of the host clubs followed by a four - round stroke play tournament with both team and individual gross and nett competitions – staged in four divisions (based on handicaps) for individuals (boys and girls) with champions in each division. There will be trophies presented in all divisions for individuals and teams.

Playing and tournament opportunities for staff, parents and supporters travelling with teams.

Schools can enter as many teams as they wish.

There is no limit to the number of teams that individual schools can enter – e.g. Como Secondary College in Perth, Australia entered 7 teams in the inaugural tournament.

Supporters and families travelling with teams will be welcomed and offered their own golf day, sight-seeing and tour options.

Entry is easy on-line

The team entry fee is AUD $150 which must be paid at the time of entry by every team. Entry on-line is a quick and very convenient way to register your team – Click here .
